A bit about me
|
I'm a proud Queenslander, born and bred in Toowoomba. I come from a blue collar family. My dad was a butcher. Straight out of highschool I joined the Queensland Police Academy as a 17-year-old cadet. After 34 years—walking the beat, chasing crooks, training other police, and navigating bureaucracy—I handed in my gun and badge to pursue my love of crime fiction writing.
My stories are inspired by real policing experiences. The midnight callouts, the paperwork, the court cases, the crime scenes, the investigations, eyeballing criminals in police interviews, supporting victims. The moments of fear, frustration, burn-out, pride, and dark humour that only cops ever see. I write to immerse readers in that world, fast, gritty, authentic, and emotionally loaded. Over the years I've studied everything from criminal justice to creative writing, and I'm currently tackling a Masters degree at the University of Queensland. My novels have been shortlisted in the Watpad Awards, the Hawkeye Prize, and the Plaza Crime Prize. My short stories have been published in journals and magazines. This led to a traditional publishing contract with Hawkeye Publishing. I was a Qld Writers Centre Fishbowl Resident. I'm the co-host of the Genre Fiction Podcast where fellow crime writer Harry Colfer and I interview authors and writing industry professionals. |
